IICCP Books

Asian Families in Canada and the United States

This book presents a comprehensive overview of Asian families residing in Canada and the United States by portraying and analyzing Asian Canadian and Asian American immigrant families in an integrated yet nuanced way. Chapters use an interdisciplinary approach to provide more comprehensive coverage of the vast diversity as well as common trends and shared characteristics of Asian families. Specifically, the volume examines the experiences of families whose ancestry can be traced to East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia.

Asian Families in Canada and the United States is a must-have resource for researchers, professors, graduate students as well as clinicians, professionals, and policymakers in the fields of developmental, social, and cross-cultural psychology, parenting and family studies, social work, and all interrelated disciplines.

This 92-page publication is a part of the Cambridge Elements Series ‘Psychology and Culture’ (Editor: Kenneth D. Keith). It compares the nature of childhood in four representative societies differing in their subsistence activities: bands of Australian hunter-gatherers, Tibetan nomadic pastoralists, peasants residing in Maya villages, and South Korean students growing up in a digital information society. In addition, it traces a variety of intertwined global changes that have led to sharply reduced child mortality rates, shrinking family sizes, contested gender roles, increased marriage ages, long-term enrollment of children and especially girls in educational institutions, and the formation of ‘glocal’ identities.

"Visions and Resources will be relevant for anyone teaching a course in international psychology, anyone planning on becoming more involved in international teaching, service or research, and for all members of the APA International Psychology Division." Danny Wedding, Ph.D., Past Editor, PsycCRITIQUES

"[The book] provides extensive information and resources to psychologists, students, and those from other fields who are interested in learning more about this important area of behavioral science. To begin with the book is authored by four giants in the field of psychology, Drs. Harold Takooshian, Uwe Gielen, Florence Denmark, and Ann O’Roark. Between them they have several hundred publications and held leadership positions in many major psychological organizations."Elaine Congress, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Professor, Fordham University

"I am enthusiastic about this new addition to the handful of books addressing international psychology. It belongs on the bookshelf of everyone genuinely interested in international psychology ."Danny Wedding, Ph.D.

“As a long-time international psychologist myself, I see this bold new volume as a great leap forward for international psychology. The 73 distinguished contributors and editors from 21 countries have carefully crafted a handbook that will be the go-to resource on the topic for years to come. For psychology to continue to be relevant in the 21st century it must become more international; I am grateful this book will help us accomplish this challenging but rewarding goal.”—Philip G. Zimbardo, Ph.D., Past-President American Psychological Association

How can psychology professors in the USA and other nations make their courses more international? This question is addressed in this indispensable new sourcebook, co-authored by 73 prominent contributors and covering 21 main areas of psychology.

Three-quarters of the world’s more than one million psychologists are now residing outside the U.S. Indeed, psychology is rapidly turning into a much more global discipline. This volume is intended to introduce psychology instructors to a variety of broad perspectives as well as numerous specific suggestions that can support their efforts to internationalize their course offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In this way, they can prepare their students to become more culturally sensitive and function more effectively as citizens and psychologists in the evolving globalized world.

Handbook of Counseling and Psychotherapy

Many factors in the world today, such as globalization and a rise in immigration, are increasing the need for mental health practitioners to acquire the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. This text is the most comprehensive volume to address this need to date, exploring the history, philosophy, processes, and trends in counseling and psychotherapy in 35 countries from all regions of the globe. Organized by continent and country, each chapter is written by esteemed scholars drawing on intimate knowledge of their homelands. They explore such topics as their countries’ demographics, counselor education programs, current counseling theories and trends, and significant traditional and indigenous treatment and healing methods. This consistent structure facilitates quick and easy comparisons and contrasts across cultures, offering an enhanced understanding of diversity and multicultural competencies. Overall, this text is an invaluable resource for practitioners, researchers, students, and faculty, showing them how to look beyond their own borders and cultures to enhance their counseling practices.

"Routledge’s Leadership: Theory and Practice series is a significant addition to the current scholarship on leadership, and The Global Obama: Crossroads of Leadership in the 21stCentury, edited by Obama biographer Dinesh Sharma and psychologist Uwe Glelen, offers penetrating observations about President Obama’s leadership style as it relates to foreign policy. With contributions from scholars from all five continents, this book is a trove of information and insight."
-- James MacGregor Burns, author of Leadership

The Global Obama examines the president’s image in five continents and more than twenty countries. It is the first book to look at Barack Obama’s presidency and analyze how Obama and America are viewed by publics, governments, and political commentators around world. The author of Barack Obama in Hawaii and Indonesia: The Making of a Global President (Top 10 Black History Book) scaled the globe to gather opinions – cultural, historical, and political analyses – about Obama’s leadership style. Writers, journalists, psychologists, consultants, and social scientists present their views on Obama’s leadership, popularity, and many of the global challenges that still remain unresolved. As a progress report, this is the first book that tries to grasp ‘the Obama phenomenon’ in totality, as perceived by populations around the world with special focus on America’s leadership in the 21st Century.

This edited reader, with contributions from experts on families in various countries, documents and explains family life and practices throughout the world, including preindustrial, developing, fully industrialized, and postmodern information societies. Each chapter is organized around a set of similar themes and concerns: socio-historical and demographic information about the families being studied, religious and cultural beliefs tied to family practices, husband-wife/parent roles and responsibilities, parent-child socialization, and policy initiatives within that society. The opening chapters provide a theoretical overview and a basis for examining family changes and organization patterns from evolutionary and postmodern perspectives.

Toward Global Psychology

Toward a Global Psychology defines the emerging field of international psychology. It provides an overview of the conceptual models, research methodologies, interventions, and pedagogical approaches that are most appropriate to transnational settings. In so doing, the book provides readers with a rich appreciation of how to approach a global psychology as researchers, practitioners, and students. The book’s thorough review of the existing literature on international psychology from around the world provides the knowledge needed to successfully engage in the science and practice of psychology in an increasingly globalized society.

The vast majority—96 percent—of the world's children live outside the U.S. However, research on child and adolescence development has mostly focused on American and European youth, while neglecting most of the world's children. This all-encompassing volume introduces global perspectives on young people across the globe, focusing on such topics as parenting and childcare, international literacy campaigns, gender roles, violence against girls, adolescence in poor and rich countries, street children, child soldiers, global nomads, immigrant children, and developmental psychopathology across cultures. Recently updated, the second edition includes the latest findings in the field as well as many new chapters.

International Counseling Case Studies Handbook

In this book, authors from 33 countries demonstrate multicultural skills and competencies through case studies that illustrate approaches to counseling and psychotherapy in their countries. Following an introductory section on the use of case studies, chapters focus on a cross-section of countries in Africa; Australia and Asia; Central, North, and South America; Europe; and the Middle East. Each case includes the client’s presenting concerns, a culture-sensitive assessment and treatment plan, an analysis and critical reflection of the case, and questions for discussion. The final chapter presents a comparative analysis of the cases.

This book presents a new approach to the history of psychology by presenting the biographies of 17 psychologists and psychiatrists that have been active in 14 countries located around the world. The book’s biographical section begins with the colorful figure of Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) who was born in Germany, created and practiced Mesmerism in Austria and France, retired to Switzerland, and died in Germany; it ends with the biography of the South African anti-apartheid activist and clinical psychologist Saths Cooper (*1950), the current president of the International Union of Psychological Science. Altogether, it covers a time span of more than 250 years and depicts psychology as an international discipline that has been shaped by a plethora of historical, cultural, political, and intellectual forces.

This volume focuses on the general nature of cultural influences in counseling rather than on counseling specific ethnic groups. Counseling practices from all over the world, not just those of Western society, are explored. Bringing together the work of a diverse group of international experts, the editors have compiled a volume that is not only concise and teachable but also an essential guidebook for all mental health professionals.

The Handbook of Culture, Therapy, and Healing

The editors have brought together leading psychologists, psychiatrists, anthropologists, and others to consider the interaction of psychosocial, biological, and cultural variables as they influence the assessment of health and illness and the course of therapy. The volume includes broadly conceived theoretical and survey chapters; detailed descriptions of specific healing traditions in Asia, the Americas, Africa, and the Arab world; and chapters focusing on such current issues as multicultural concerns within societies, specific populations, such as refugees, and the integration of traditional and modern forms of counseling and healing. Taken together, the chapters offer a broad overview of Western and non-Western traditions as these span the divides among psychosocial, medical, and religious approaches.

The Handbook of Culture, Therapy, and Healing is a unique resource, containing information about Western therapies practiced in non-Western cultures, non-Western therapies practiced both in their own context and in the West, shamanism, and religious healing, and their interrelationships; as well as contemporary (Western) scientific perspectives on the wide range of therapy and healing practices. It will expand the horizons of all those who work with or study human beings in distress.
