ABOUT IICCP

Founded on March 6, 1998, IICCP’s mission is to foster the internationalization of the science of psychology. This translates into the following objectives at the international and local levels: (1) to promote cross-cultural awareness at St. Francis College by developing classes, workshops, symposia, and conferences; (2) to foster a sense of appreciation of the cultural richness in the St. Francis College community; (3) to involve students in cross-cultural research; (4) to sponsor research and publications in international and cross-cultural psychology; and (5) to create a network of ties with other interested psychological institutions in the U.S. and abroad. Members of the institute are active locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Director of the Institute, Uwe P. Gielen, received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University. His work has centered on international psychology and moral development. He is a former president of the International Council of Psychologists (ICP), the Society for Cross-Cultural Research (SCCR), and APA’s International Psychology Division. The Director for Research Projects, Sunghun Kim, received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas - Austin and specializes in cross-cultural psychology, the comparative study of moral values, and methodology.

The Institute for International and Cross-Cultural Psychology (IICCP) sponsors research and publications in international and cross-cultural psychology; promotes, develops, and implements workshops, symposiums, lectures, and conferences at St. Francis College; involve students in cross-cultural research and the institute’s programs; foster a sense of involvement in the cultural richness of the St. Francis College community; creates network ties with other interested psychological institutions in the USA and abroad. Between 1998 and 2021 the Institute supported the writing and editing of numerous publications in international psychology including 24 books that have appeared in 5 countries.

Students play an important role in the activities of the institute. Each semester, student assistants help to keep the institute going by editing papers, proofreading chapters and articles for professional journals, involvement in research activities, marketing events, helping to set up guest lectures and conferences, and advising students about psychology. Members of the Psi Chi Chapter and the Psychology Club also lend their support to the institute.

Every year, APA Division 52 (International Psychology) selects one book for the Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award. The award is presented to the author(s) or editor(s) of a book that adds greatly to our understanding of global phenomena and problems from a psychological point of view. Dr. Jamie Macdonald is the chair of the award committee.

Projects

Growing Up Chinese in New York City
In this broadly conceived project, a research team headed by Uwe P. Gielen, Ting Lei (CUNY), and Jonathan Palumbo is exploring the acculturation of 14-33-year-old male and female Chinese Americans residing in New York City. The project includes autobiographical essays by Chinese American students as well as interviews with them that are designed to elucidate their cultural belief systems, socialization experiences, and attitudes toward their families, peers, schools, and Chinese as well as American culture.

DVD: International Psychology: Perspectives and Profiles (with Judy Kuriansky, Teachers College Columbia University)
This DVD contains three parts: Part 1 (35 minutes): International Psychology: What Students Need to Know, Part2 (20 minutes): Pathfinders in International Psychology, Part 3 (5 minutes): Profile of Dr. Saths Cooper. The DVD introduces students and others to the field of international psychology. It includes interviews with prominent international psychologists and interested students.

The Global Obama: Crossroads of Leadership in the 21^st Century (2014). Routledge.
Dinesh Sharma and Uwe P. Gielen have published this edited book, in which a group of prominent social scientists from countries located around the world analyzes global perceptions of Obama’s leadership style and his international policies.

International Counseling Case Studies Handbook (2015)
Designed as a companion volume to the Handbook of Counseling and Psychotherapy in an International Context (2013), this book contains clinical and counseling case studies originating in 33 countries.

Pathfinders in International Psychology (2015). Information Age Publishing. Grant Rich (Alaska) and Uwe P. Gielen have published an edited volume that discusses 17 significant figures in international psychology ranging from Mesmer in the late 18^th century to several pioneers who are still active.

Women around the World: Psychosocial Perspectives (2017)
Carrie M. Brown (Agnes Scott College), Uwe P. Gielen, Judith L. Gibbons (St. Louis University), and Judy Kuriansky (Columbia University) have published an edited book designed to provide a global overview of women’s status, roles, experiences and attitudes in selected countries located around the world.

Asian Families in North America: Implications for Mental Health and Well-Being (2021)
This edited volume by Susan S. Chuang (University of Guelph), Roy Moodley (University of Toronto), Uwe P. Gielen (St. Francis College), and Saadia Akram-Pall (Toronto, Canada) discuss the status of immigrant families from different parts of Asia and reviews efforts to provide counseling and therapy for their mental health and well-being.

This book presents a comprehensive overview of Asian families residing in Canada and the United States by portraying and analyzing Asian Canadian and Asian American immigrant families in an integrated yet nuanced way. Specifically, the volume examines the experiences of families whose ancestry can be traced to East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia.

The vast majority—96 percent—of the world's children live outside the U.S. However, research on child and adolescence development has mostly focused on American and European youth, while neglecting most of the world's children. This all-encompassing volume introduces global perspectives on young people across the globe, focusing on such topics as parenting and childcare, international literacy campaigns, gender roles, violence against girls, adolescence in poor and rich countries, street children, child soldiers, global nomads, immigrant children, and developmental psychopathology across cultures. In this book, authors from 33 countries demonstrate multicultural skills and competencies through case studies that illustrate approaches to counseling and psychotherapy in their countries. Following an introductory section on the use of case studies, chapters focus on a cross-section of countries in Africa; Australia and Asia; Central, North, and South America; Europe; and the Middle East. Each case includes the client’s presenting concerns, a culture-sensitive assessment and treatment plan, an analysis and critical reflection of the case, and questions for discussion. This book presents a new approach to the history of psychology by presenting the biographies of 17 psychologists and psychiatrists that have been active in 14 countries located around the world. The book’s biographical section begins with the colorful figure of Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) who was born in Germany, created and practiced Mesmerism in Austria and France, retired to Switzerland, and died in Germany; it ends with the biography of the South African anti-apartheid activist and clinical psychologist Saths Cooper (*1950), the current president of the International Union of Psychological Science. Altogether, it covers a time span of more than 250 years and depicts psychology as an international discipline that has been shaped by a plethora of historical, cultural, political, and intellectual forces.

The editors have brought together leading psychologists, psychiatrists, anthropologists, and others to consider the interaction of psychosocial, biological, and cultural variables as they influence the assessment of health and illness and the course of therapy. The volume includes broadly conceived theoretical and survey chapters; detailed descriptions of specific healing traditions in Asia, the Americas, Africa, and the Arab world; and chapters focusing on such current issues as multicultural concerns within societies, specific populations, such as refugees, and the integration of traditional and modern forms of counseling and healing. Taken together, the chapters offer a broad overview of Western and non-Western traditions as these span the divides among psychosocial, medical, and religious approaches.

The Handbook of Culture, Therapy, and Healing is a unique resource, containing information about Western therapies practiced in non-Western cultures, non-Western therapies practiced both in their own context and in the West, shamanism, and religious healing, and their interrelationships; as well as contemporary (Western) scientific perspectives on the wide range of therapy and healing practices. It will expand the horizons of all those who work with or study human beings in distress.

Ursula Gielen Book Award

The mission of Division 52 is to advance psychology internationally as a science and profession, and through education and advocacy. In support of this mission, the Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award is presented to the author(s) or editor(s) of a recent book that makes the greatest contribution to psychology as an international discipline and profession, or more specifically, the degree to which the book adds to our understanding of global phenomena and problems from a psychological point of view. Examples include psychological interventions at the micro- and macro- levels, multinational organizations, questions of mental health, pedagogy, peace and war, gender roles, contributions of indigenous psychologies to global psychology, textbooks that integrate theory, research and practice from around the globe, edited volumes integrating contributions from scholars around the world, and overviews of international and global psychology.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Nominations may include authored or edited volumes in any language. All submissions must be accompanied by a 2-page letter in English making a case for the book’s potential contribution to global psychology. Copyright must be 2021. Nominations may not include fiction and biographies.

Specifics of the Award

Winners will be announced in Spring 2022, presented with a certificate, and invited to give an address at the 2022 APA Convention. They will receive one full payment of the convention fee and a stipend of $500 to help fund their attendance at the convention.

Criteria

In judging the contribution of each book, the following set of guidelines will be used: 1. How creative and novel are the ideas expressed in the book? 2. How large and significant a contribution does the book make to psychology as a global discipline and profession? 3. Are the book’s contents international or global in nature? 4. Is the book scientifically rigorous and logically sound? Are its theoretical bases well supported and translatable into sound and ethical practice? 5. What is the literary quality of the work? Is it interestingly and well written? Is the audience for whom it is written explicitly stated and does it reach that audience? 6. Does the book maintain a clear focus on psychology as a science and practice?

Ursula Gielen (1916-1997, Germany) was vitally interested in the well-being of indigenous, persecuted, and poor people around the world, with a special emphasis on women and children. Her legacy and commitment to international concerns and human welfare continue through her children: Ute Seibold, a former foreign language secretary in Switzerland; Uwe Gielen, an international psychologist in the United States; Odina Diephaus, a former interpreter with the European Parliament in Belgium; and Anka Gielen, a counseling psychologist in Germany.
